Touringkitty Travels: My first international trip

Ten years ago, five countries, three months, two categories in one choral competition.

It was my first international trip. First time to be away from family. First time to ride a plane. First time in Europe. First time to join an international choral competition. These many firsts I had the pleasure to share with about 20 people. We collectively call ourselves the Philippine Madrigal Singers, or Madz to the legions of choral fans it has gathered through the years.

The first time will always be the most memorable. And as I celebrate my ten years of traveling, I’d like to share highlights of it through this post.

Pre-departure: How I got into the semicircle

The Madz quartet exams is for me, one of the, if not, the toughest, exam there is. I can still remember the scene. We were waiting for our turn outside the Minihall of the UP College of Music. Paneling for that quartet exam were Sir Mark, Ma’am OA (Prof. Andrea Veneracion, Madz founder), and Anna Abeleda (now Piquero, a Madz alumna and sought-after conductor who just got off of the Madz circle at that time). We were all anxious, excited, nervous, while listening to the other singers inside. It was like American Idol, literally, where you will be critiqued after singing. Passing that exam was our golden ticket to the upcoming European tour.

If I could remember right, OA just told me to vocalize everyday. I felt even more nervous as I did not know if I passed or not. Luckily I did. And was cast to join the tour.

Homesickness is a serious sickness

The first timers were stricken by so much homesickness that we were always on the hunt for an internet connection or a phone booth to call home even for a few minutes in a week. I spent so much on calling and sending SMS and paying for internet just to update my mom, my sister, and my boyfriend (now my husband) on where I was. We’d cry over the Harana songs of the male section of the Madz during concerts. During concerts, yes. We terribly missed home!

The three of us were first time travelers. Enrico was the youngest among the group and I was the youngest among the females. That's how we were so excited to see snow for the first time in the Dolomiti mountains in Italy.

Preparing for the tour

Before we left Manila, our schedule got tighter and tighter. We just had to sing and sing together, that’s why. We would have performances and rehearsals almost everyday. This is also to prepare our bodies and voices for the upcoming trip–which was equally busy. Ma’am OA met us the day before we left Europe to share stories and give advice. We got to meet her again halfway during the tour, when she followed us in one of the stops in France, which was incidentally, on the day of her birthday.

Tough assignments for a first timer

I did not know I could play guitar until Sir Mark asked me to. I had to always practice while in Manila to prepare me for my international debut! Each concert was nerve-wracking because aside from playing guitar, Sir Mark also entrusted me the task of being the pitchgiver. But all these definitely boosted my confidence on stage.

Mission: accomplished!

We brought home the bacon! Two bacons, even. We won two first prizes in the 50th Certamen Internacional de Habaneras y Polifonia in Torrevieja, Spain. It was a big moment for the Madz, that we even got busier as we arrived Manila.

And the rest of the traveling story, as they say, is history.

This was one of the songs we sung for that competition. A tu lado by Javier Busto (a friend of the Madz) and Anton Mena. Such a simple and beautiful habanera which made us win first prizes in the Habanera and Polyphony categories of the competition.

If there was only one thing I regretted, I should have written all these down! I had a journal in 2006 which was still with me, but photos of each trip will suffice.

Will photo post on the next blog post!

Meanwhile, read more posts about my first time travel with the Madz here and here. All Madz related posts are here.

Touringkitty Travels: Hotel Kimberly Tagaytay

It’s almost the end of May, but of course this month would not be complete without a summer getaway!

The Schatzi family, plus my mom and sister, went on a weekend trip to Tagaytay.

Hotel Kimberly Tagaytay is located at Amadeo Road, where the coffee haven of Tagaytay is situated.

The hotel is accessible by public transportation. From Pasay-Buendia, we took a bus going to Nasugbu at DLTB along Taft Avenue, and you just get off NBI/Mahogany area, then take a tricycle to the hotel.

We actually went here last year already, but I knew I had to come back. And we did!

This was last year's trip. Landscaping was just being done.

Just like last year, I purchased the overnight accommodation through a coupon company. I purchased this early this year, and found the last weekend of May free for the five of us. I got a Premiere Suite for four persons. Last year, the coupon was on sale for half the price. This year, it was less than 50% off, but since I really loved the place and the service, I really decided to purchase the coupon again for another trip this year.

This lobby greets you.

I like Hotel Kimberly because you can:

Watch TV. In this case, they have cable TV. AND they have Disney Junior!!! See Hi-5 there? I love this hotel =)

The TV was especially helpful when nighttime comes and she’s feeling homesick. In this case, she did feel homesick, and did not want to sleep in the bed! So, I was carrying her the whole night.

Enjoy the view. This was our view though, the playground area. There was a company having their teambuilding activity.

The hotel offers massage services. I joined their Facebook contest earlier this month, and I was able to avail their free one hour massage. Well, my mom did, I let her use the voucher which they emailed me. But she said I should try it, too, and so I did! Thanks, mom! Warning though: massages are done inside your own rooms.

We brought dinner food, actually we were stuffed during lunch, which we had at Skyranch. Will tell about it on the next post.

This buffet breakfast greeted us the next morning. My daughter woke up at 5:30AM! Too early, I know. But she had activities in mind already, like eating and swimming and playing. Who could prevent her from waking up?

Thank you, Hotel Kimberly, for making our stay super fun and safe. Your staff are truly friendly and helpful. The guests, even if they are strangers, gain friends among other guests because of your nice service.

Am I coming back next year? Let’s see if there will be another coupon deal selling.

How did your summer go? Do you know of any places in Tagaytay or a nearby province which might have these facilities as well?

Touringkitty Travels: Beauty and the Beast…auf Deutsch, bitte!

Cos this article circulated the web yesterday (click the photo!). Curtains are opening January 2015 at the CCP.
Curtains are opening on January 2015 at the CCP!

Were you able to read this article? It quickly circulated through the web and social media, that’s why most of us are asking how much will the tickets be.

My daughter was quick to remark that she saw this on Movie Stars Cafe (click this link to get a 10% discount on your visit!).

I saw this musical with the Madz back in 2007 in Berlin. Only it was in Deutsch! And we understood it since we have watched the cartoons as kids.

Free days are most treasured during our Madz tours. One free day during our Berlin stop in 2007 was spent watching a Disney musical live at the Potsdamer Platz theater. We were in for a treat–the one doing Belle was a Filipina, and we had a theater tour!

Not to be a spoiler, but I want to show some photos of our backstage tour. The production was kind enough to show us what’s happening before the show.

Let's begin with Belle's dressing room. Ain't it cute?

Rasa Sayang Trip Day 3: A Taste of the City

Check out Day 1 and Day 2 posts.

Date: September 27

Location: Singapore (the city, and some of it)

So, we’re back to Singapore and had nothing exactly planned out for the day. Good thing our dear cousin lives there, so it was pretty much family day!

Image
Here’s my cousin, Mark, with my mom. He has been in Singapore for quite some time already. Thanks for bringing us around, Kuya!

Unfortunately, our camera kinda conked out (battery is always kaputt, so not much photos). I will be using some photos from my mom and sister, with their permission.

Incidentally, my mom, sister, and her boyfriend are set to go back to Manila that same night, so we had to go around to as much places as we can. Goals for the day were:

1. Go to a church and give thanks – CHECK! At the nearby Cathedral of Good Shepherd.

Image

2. Stroll in a mall – CHECK! Not only one, but several interconnected malls at Orchard. We took the MRT like crazy and we even had a stroller in tow!

Image
At Ion Orchard Mall.

3. Buy pasalubong (gifts to bring home) – CHECK! We went to Chinatown and got more than pasalubong.

Image
THIS was a bonus: we got to go around this Buddhist Temple, all four floors of it! There was a museum and orchidarium, too. There was a room full of gold but we can’t take photos. We also got to see them praying in this hall at one point.

4. Eat Chili Crab – CHECK! We saw it on Kris TV before the trip. It was a worthwhile try, but heck it was smoking hot in your mouth!

Image
Chili Crab. Right at ‘ya!

5. Take a picture with the Merlion – CHECK! Just before they took the trip back to the hotel then to airport.

Image
Touringkitty in action!

We met with another friend for coffee then headed back to the hotel to send off my family. The enjoyed the trip, though there were inconveniences which were out of our hands. But we all definitely will go back to Singapore. I still plan to raid the Great Singapore Sale once in my life.

Watch our for our last day in Singapore here at the blog!

Rasa Sayang Trip Day 2: Johor Bahru, Malaysia

See Day 1 here.

Date: September 26

Location: Johor Bahru, Malaysia

The tour continues in another country–Malaysia!

My sister booked us tickets to Legoland and Hello Kitty Town days before our trip. We all agreed that we never get a chance to go out of the country often, so why not go for as much as we can in one trip!

The package included a coach which takes us to Malaysia from Singapore Flyer, which was the meeting place at 9:00 AM that day.

image

We had to pass through immigration checks for both countries, which were all uneventful. Thy had an efficient system and a lot of tour buses were traveling as well. I also learned that some locals work for the other country, so they had to go through the same process each day. Wow!

So, off to Legoland we go!

image

Too bad, it was raining when we got there. This was just before we entered and it was steadily drizzling already. We bought raincoats inside and breezed our way to the park. Not so many rides were operating, so we just took photos of the Lego creations.

Finally, after taking a tour of the rainy park and having our yummy pizza and pasta lunch, it was time to go to Hello Kitty Town. It was not raining anymore.

The bus, the bus! Unfortunately, it's not our designated bus :(

We said hello to our feline favourite.

The kid slept at the bus!

We had fun in their different activity areas. We thought the place was small–only one floor–but we were floored with the activities. Warning: photo heavy!

The Hello Kitty House filled with Hello Kitty stuff, like this dining table:

There were booths like the manicure area:

Cookie painting area (they used pancake syrup, yum!)

Beads area, where we made some of these. These are plastic beads then the guy ironed them together. Cute!

Costume area. My mom tried it on:

The treasure hunt area, in which we did not get the right answer!

20140129-001140.jpg

There was also a play area with balls and slides, and a small café serving simple cookies and desserts. There is a bigger café on the First floor, which had sandwiches and drinks, our on-the-road food on the way back to Singapore.

Then there was a stage, which they called the “Purrfect Stage.” It had different sets of shows during the day. We caught the Friendship show and the Fiesta show.

20140129-001155.jpg

20140129-001136.jpg

There was also a teacup ride, which we all enjoyed.

20140129-001102.jpg

Finally, we did not miss to take photos with our feline friend over at the Kawaii Photo Booth!

20140129-001126.jpg

My turn! And Hello Kitty even held my Touringkitty!

20140129-001131.jpg

My daughter kept on exclaiming how happy she was. I was, too! My husband said in return that he’s happy to see me and Aria that happy! We love him to bits! We are all happy actually that Aria was able to experience all of these in her young age, and likewise, my mom and sister, too, whose very first out of the country trip is this. With the whole family. We should plan for the next big trip this early!

Standby for the third and fourth day!

Rasa Sayang Trip Day 1: Sentosa Island, Singapura

Date: September 25

Location: Sentosa Island, Singapura

Day one officially began September 25th. With only a couple hours of sleep (including the three year old), we all woke up to have breakfast at the nearby Kopitiam, which is like their local foodcourt, selling different cuisines at affordable prices. We had breakfast here everyday so we got to try almost all it had to offer! I never failed to order Teh-O and Kopi-O coupled with a  Kaya Toast and two soft-boiled eggs, for only SG$2! That’s less than 70 Pesos, which is cheaper than the same combos sold here in the Philippines. Aria here had a blast with a sweet and savoury siopao — one is custard and the other is pork. Plus freshly made melon juice.

Image

We had to find our way going to Universal Studios Singapore. With a map on hand, our stuff for the day, including a stroller, we reached USS at around 10am. We rode the MRT from Dhoby Ghout to Harbourfront Centre then took a Cable Car to Sentosa Island! Upon alighting the Cable Car, we found a cable car museum which we managed to check out when we got back. Then we rode the free bus which goes around Sentosa Island and takes you to the different attractions there.

Finally, we got to Universal Studios!

Image

We rode only a few rides because it was also drizzling and we wanted to finish early to see more of Sentosa.

We were lucky to have photos with Shrek and Fiona!

Shrek and Fiona with the bakasyonistas: Ton, Aria, Em, Myk, Raffy

Not to be missed of course are The Revenge of the Mummy and Transformers 3D. Aria rode Treasure Hunters! She almost did not finish the ride haha but am glad she did!

We chanced upon the Sesame Street show. Perfect timing.

My mom's backdrop is the New York Public Library mock-up where the Sesame Street shows are staged.

We had time so we went around Sentosa. Checked out the tall Merlion and passed by other attractions before we headed back to the hotel. It was quite a day of walking, eating, riding, and being plain happy! We loved it.

Watch out for Day Two (which I hope to post soonest!).

~ Touringkitty

P.S.:  I am changing the title of my trip blogs into Rasa Sayang, which means loving feeling. Incidentally, it is also a popular folk song in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Check out the Madz singing it here.

Rasa Sayang Trip: The Departure aka My Birthday!

Date: 24 September 2013

Location: Pasay City

I woke up not being twentysomething anymore this day. But I am happy. Very!

Woke up to a beautiful Tuesday morning with my loves! With thoughts of last minute packing, leaving home for the next five days, whipping up my birthday cake, and actually making it on time at the airport, I began the day with a Holy Mass in the nearest church, at six in the morning.

The Homily was about the importance of two Holy Sacraments — Baptism and Confirmation, both of which our own Shrine is giving importance through the upcoming “Binyagang Bayan” and “Kumpilang Bayan this month. The priest stressed the importance of godparents (will thank these wonderful people who came blessing our lives in another post). It was a great Mass, but I attended alone, as my daughter was still sleeping then.

The hours went fast. I was able to bake this cake, though:

Yummy healthy whole wheat carrot cake with cream cheese and brown sugar, anyone? :)
Yummy healthy whole wheat carrot cake with cream cheese and brown sugar, anyone? 🙂

Which, of course, this little marionette blew the candles out a gazillion times before we got to actually eat it!

Then, we’re headed to the airport! After paying the travel tax, getting instructions from the travel agent who booked our hotel and Universal Studios Tour, we had dinner then off we boarded in the plane!

All in one row: Sister's boyfie, my sister, my mom, on the other side, and me, my daughter, with my hubby taking this photo on our side.
All in one row: Sister’s boyfie, my sister, my mom, on the other side, and me, my daughter, with my hubby taking this photo on our side.

And the vacation begins! We arrived Singapore at a little before midnight. We kind of settled down at about two in the morning, and had to wake up at six. Aria had a crying fest because she got homesick. We had a tough hour putting her to sleep again cos she was already asleep in the plane!

Next post: Sentosa Day! This day was fun. Until the next. Sleep, I must!

P.S. Before I forget, even if it was super duper late already, thank YOU for all the prayers, greetings via text and Facebook for my birthday and the safe travel of our family. We prayed for all of you as well! <3
