In search of a Mommy bag

What’s your current bag, mommies?

Mine is like this.

And that’s my ONLY bag now. For any outfit regardless of colour, any occasion, any…anything!

During my college days, I have a collection of bags. Not that much, but enough to switch for any occasion. Now that I’m a mom, I want just one bag for everything, so that I don’t have to switch bags and end up leaving stuff behind. I look for these specific qualities of a bag:

1. Spacious yet not too big. So I could dump in everything–make up kit, personal kit, even change of clothes for the little one.

2. Sturdy. One which can stand by itself.

3. Straps, lots of it. The bag I have now I can sling on my body and on my shoulders. They should be sturdy too.

I even hook carabiners onto straps which I use to hook grocery bags or water bottle.

4. Storage slots or pockets in and outside for easy access.

5. Spill proof. Against rain and water spills.

About time to search for a new one, with a more neutral color. I always pass by Celine boutiques and been wanting to check their items.

Good thing there’s online shopping! CLN handbags are available online at ZALORA Philippines.

What do you look for in buying your bags?

#DownyTimeless: Celebrating the most important woman in our lives

Downy sure knows how to pamper moms. Our own moms, no less.

The same moms who carried us in their womb for nine months, who cradled us to sleep, fed us, gave us a bath even if we so resist, who raised us up while protecting us from harm.

The very moms whose scent we will never forget.

Just in time for Mother’s Day yesterday, a celebration of mothers was held last week. The invitation said we can bring along our mom. I did bring my mom, and brought my daughter, too.

First on the agenda: for us to line up for the photo booth as we entered the Conservatory. Beautiful portrait captured by Idea Shop.

The short program was hosted by Stephanie Zubiri-Crespi, who shared her own experiences as a daughter to her mother and as a mother herself.

Then, we were treated to a sumptuous lunch while being serenaded by actor and singer Guji Lorenzana. Downy also prepared a simple AVP, in which they asked us to send in greetings for our moms.

Here's our contribution to the AVP.

Educents celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

teacherappreciation_emailnews

The teaching profession is one vocation very close to my heart, as I am also one. The passion, dedication, patience, and love they give to students is really unimaginable, and very admirable.

Just last week, one of my dearest teachers in grade school passed away, and some of my classmates and I paid a visit during her wake. We were so surprised to see two folders of our personal letters to her during her birthday, Valentines Day, Teachers’ Day, and other occasions, also invitations to birthday parties, other notes given to her, and our class photos. All those years she had saved all those letters. Some years ago, one of her daughters asked her why she saved all those letters (what was in her wake was just a fraction of the letters she kept in albums). Our teacher told her daughter it is for her students to see when she’s passed on.

She battled the Big C for several years, without having undergone operation or chemotherapy. She lived longer than expected, and is now resting with the Almighty Creator. We’re just so proud of her courage and wisdom she showed all these years.

I am thankful for educators because:

  1. Next to our own parents, we learn from them. Not only about lessons, but about life in general.
  2. Teaching is a gift and a blessing, and they have just that.
  3. The love for children that they have grows, and multiplies.

Education has such an impact on ourselves and our little ones. Educents is here to help you pay it forward. In honor of Teacher Appreciation week, Educents & Peekapak have teamed up to provide your favorite educators with a gift basket worth over $40, which includes a FREE $10 Educents Gift Card & 3 months of Peekapak lesson plans (3 digital storybooks, 12 in-class lessons & 12 at-home activities) that teach Character Education and Language Arts.

So, whether it’s your mom, your classroom teacher, your neighbors, or another special human being who taught you important lessons, thank them by giving them a FREE gift basket, on Educents!

One Disney Junior Morning

My dot com celebrated its first year last week! Happy Anniversary touringkitty.com!

This blog has definitely brought me to places. But since I got busier, I only choose the events I will attend and blog about. And this one should not be missed, especially that this is for my darling daughter.

Which parent would not have heard of Sofia the First? Doc McStuffins? or Jake the Neverland Pirate? I’m sure almost all of us did. They’re all characters from Disney Junior, one of the more popular cable channels for children. And their Manila and Cebu fans had the privilege to see them in person this April!

Disney Junior characters live in the Philippines!
For Ariadne, totally.

And so, even if it’s in a far off place (called the end station of the MRT), we headed to SM North Edsa’s The Block early on April 10th which is the scheduled media launch, at 10:00AM.

We got a wee bit early, so we had a chance to have breakfast and freshen up before the mall opened. Yes, we were THAT early, haha.

Here are some photos I took during the media launch.

The much-awaited entrance of the Disney Junior characters! Caught a short video of it.

Here are the stars of the show, not one but three! Jake the Neverland Pirate, Sofia the First, and Doc McStuffins!

First Time Parents: Breastfeeding and Newborn Care by Manila Workshops

When I was pregnant, I only attended one breastfeeding class of La Leche League Manila. Can’t remember attending any other, so parenting a newborn was like a trial and error thing (and I tell you, it will always be).

But we can better prepare by reading, researching, and attending workshops, like this. Good thing these are now very accessible these days to new parents.

Manila Workshops and Best for Families, Inc. sets up this Breastfeeding and Newborn Care workshop on April 11, 2015. Speakers will be Joyce Martinez (lactation counselor) and Dr. Jamie Isip-Cumpas (pediatrician).

Creating a Benchmark for Volunteerism and Social Responsibility: The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf®

Paint the town redLong before corporate social responsibility and volunteerism became a buzzword for brands and corporations, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® has already made it an intrinsic mission and company philosophy.

It’s a commitment that they took on back in 2008, when they started the Give In To Giving, 12 Cups with The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® campaign, an initiative designed to share this mission with its loyal customers.

“It began by taking something that was relevant to customers at the time—the “planner craze,” if you will— and creating something more meaningful that could be an extension of our commitment as a brand to giving back. What spurred out of this intention was a Commemorative Notebook that became a medium for us, and our patrons, to support advocacies in need and share their blessings. It was and continues to be the only journal that encourages more purposeful action towards ones’ social responsibility,” explained Paolo del Rosario, Vice President for Marketing of The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf®.

Customers were asked to collect 12 stamps and choose from any of the 12 advocacies and organizations that The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf was supporting. These ranged from women’s groups, to children, animals, the environment, indigenous people or those with disabilities and illnesses. Completing all 12 stamps meant the customer could bring home the commemorative notebook that featured artworks from contemporary Filipino artists and proceeds collected went to each customer’s chosen organization. The original artworks featured in the covers of the Commemorative Notebook were also auctioned and were donated to the charities.

The entire campaign was such a success that not only was it well received by loyal patrons; it also won numerous awards.

The following year, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® introduced its follow up with 24 Cups of Goodwill, where proceeds from the campaign were given to its 24 partner organizations. In 2010, for Changing Lives with Every Cup, they shifted their focus on sending scholars to school by partnering with Real Life Foundation and their Adopt-a-Scholar program, where the company was successfully able to send 8 scholars to university.

In 2012, they continued their efforts with the iBuild campaign, which helped raise sustainable housing solutions for impoverished families. And by 2014, they introduced the Brew Your Best Year campaign, which evolved their efforts into giving back to their loyal patrons by helping them give back to themselves as well. Through this initiative, they hope to help each person in their journey towards becoming the best version of themselves.

Their efforts through the years prove how a brand can become meaningful in addressing social change.

“It’s so much more than being well-intentioned; because at the end of the day, taking on social responsibility has to be part of a brand’s DNA,” says del Rosario.

Is it naïve to expect businesses to take on a responsibility as great as this, the way The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® did?

Not necessarily.

Companies today, locally and worldwide, are putting more focus on developing a culture of volunteerism and social responsibility—recognizing how working together can make a real difference in the community, while at the same time opening up opportunities for learning, cooperation and leadership within the organization.

What makes The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf®’s efforts stand out however, is the sincerity that drives their initiatives, where they have managed to uplift the true essence of what it truly means to care.

Case-in-point, expanding annual efforts to now cover a full year of advocacies.

Consistently, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® brings people together to participate in various community outreach events. “We place great effort into putting such events together not only for the sole purpose of helping the community, but also to encourage our own Customers and Team Members to spend meaningful time bringing joy to others in an impactful and sincere way,” explains Nella Lomotan, Engagement Marketing for The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf®.

These pocket initiatives, held monthly, are part of the Caring Cup series. And whether it’s a simple story telling event in a hospital, a physical fitness session with public school students, a tree planting project, an art workshop for children with disabilities, each event is designed to foster the spirit of volunteerism and giving among its participants.

In fact, last February 14, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® made sure to create an avenue to give love and receive love as they mounted the “Paint the Town Red this Valentines’ event. Volunteers spent the day of love giving love to children with disabilities at AIME home via a t-shirt painting activity with the intent of giving kids something that they will always remember.

“The Caring Cup is a way for us to expand and uphold a vision that we have long established for the company, where we hope to cultivate the spirit of volunteerism in our Community. We strongly encourage everyone who wants to be a part of something that impacts the life of others in a meaningful way to visit our stores and sign up for our next events.” ends del Rosario.

A snore-free marriage is a happy marriage

So you vowed to honor and cherish him in sickness and in health, for richer for poorer, till death do you part.  But have you factored in sleepless nights because he snores like a jumbo jet?

Some wives (and husbands) have not.  So what started out as a fairy tale ended as a nightmare.

In China, a 30-year-old woman divorced her husband because she claimed spending sleepless nights lying next to a heavy snorer.  The judge granted the divorce.

In another part of the world, the Associated Press reports that a newlywed Iranian filed for divorce after his bride admitted drugging him on the sly to keep him from hearing her snore.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/15/divorce-reasons_n_3763023.html

Snoring can wreck a marriage because sleep deprivation brings out the worst in us.  When a sleepless partner is cranky, tired and irritable, the other responds by being just as difficult. Sex drive takes a nosedive. Work suffers because you can’t think clearly.

http://www.medios.hu/en/snoring-therapy/information/relationships-and-snoring

Snoring can keep away friends and relatives you stay with in an overnight trip to a beach resort because they can’t stand your snoring when theyneed a good night’s sleep after all that running, swimming and playing outdoors.

Why do people snore?  Mayo Clinic cites the following causes:

• Physical reasons. A low, thick soft palate can limit the airway. So, too, do extra tissues at the back of the throat found in overweight persons.
• Alcohol. This relaxes throat muscles and reduces “natural defenses against airway obstruction.”
• Nasal troubles.  Perennial congestion in the nose or a crooked partition between your nostrils” can cause the problem.
• Sleep apnea.   The condition is serious because “throat tissues partially or completely block your airway,” thus keeping you from breathing.

http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/snoring/basics/causes/con-20031874

All is not lost. The AntiSnor Acupressure Ring helps reduce or prevent snoring using Western and Eastern medical philosophies.  The ring, worn on the little finger of the left hand, applies pressure on nerve points.  This, in turn, stimulates muscles controlling your upper airway to help reduce or prevent snoring.

The AntiSnor ring treats common ailments using finger massage on acupressure points.

Users report reduced snoring, better sleep quality, less fatigue, improved breathing and others. Allthese, minus the use of invasive procedures like an operation to solve nasal anatomy problems.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gby8wuvk_OA

The ring comes in three sizes – small, medium and large.  Or you may expand the ring to fit your little finger.

Hypoallergenic and drug-free, it is available at Watsons stores at SM Mall of Asia, SM North, SM Fairview, SM Aura, SM Megamall, SM Makati, Festival  Mall, Robinsons Galleria, Market Market, Greenbelt 1 and Gateway.
