For many years, John Robert Powers (JRP) is synonymous to high quality training in modeling, acting, and personality development.
In an event a couple of weeks ago, JRP introduced to some mom bloggers their newest offerings: The Dynamic Parenting Workshop and the Future Leaders Program.
This reception area greets you at their Makati Office.
What I clearly remember about JRP, as a kid, was it was a training ground for future models.
And I was right! They have this bulletin board with their pageant training activities.
And their latest pride is…
MJ Lastimosa, Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2014. She finished the JRP Celebrity Track in 2011.
Now, if you think you’re either too old or too young to enrol in JRP, think again. We learned that the oldest student they had is 62 years old!
JRP is glad to offer new workshops for two important groups of people: the parents and the young children.
The Dynamic Parenting Workshop is much like the parenting workshops, only given in a more comprehensive manner, covering ten specific topics, two hours per topic session. This is more studies-intensive, with the goal to educate, guide, and build a core support group among parents.
As a new parent like I am, I had so many questions. With the help of my mom, my aunts, and friends, I was able to pull through the first (almost) four years, and I can’t wait to hurdle more challenges in the future. There’s a saying that it takes two to create and a village to raise a child, and I believe so. The Dynamic Parenting Workshop aims to do that, to create a community of empowered parents who are responsive to the fast-paced life we have now.
Start them young, they say. The Future Leaders Program for 4-6 year olds will not groom your child to be a politician, no. But the program introduces the children the concept of being a leader through fun activities. Activities would also incorporate the signature programs of JRP, like oral communication and personality development.
Being a good leader is being a good follower. As parents, we model what is right or wrong to our children. When the child sees his or her peers doing something good, the more he is empowered to do good. This program might just address that, knowing that kids at this age are still in the stage of imitation.
This is a long-term course, with 30 two-hour sessions.
Their signature programs were also introduced to us, such as the English Language Program and the Multi-Level Curriculum System, especially designed for each student.
We got to take a sneak peak in their classrooms.
I love their make-up training area!Table etiquette training happens here.Spot Touringkitty! This is their lecture/orientation area.
These mom bloggers had a wonderful time meeting up (some for the first time), exchanging insights and experiences. Thanks for having us, JRP!

The guitar is one of the most versatile instruments there is. It can stand alone as concert instrument as well as assisting accompaniment for a singer or another instrument.
I have always loved the guitar. Though I’m not that proficient, I can carry playing simple chords good enough to complete a song. To compensate, I married a guitarist. He might not be playing professionally, but he can definitely pull off a classical piece, or accompany me in singing kundiman.
I was blessed to have handled a guitar program, one of my previous projects in my previous cultural work. You can read about that here.
So I fell in love with the guitar more, and it’s definitely a treat to hear classical guitarists in concert, like this foreign act who is considered the best in her country.
Paraguayan guitarist Berta Rojas is coming to Manila for a series of concerts on May 15 in Manila and May 17 in Cebu, and a masterclass on May 14.
The concert in Manila will be at 8 pm in the Meralco Theater. The concert in Cebu will be at 8 pm in the Marcelo Fernan Hall in Lahug. Jointly organized by the Independent Philippine Art Ventures, Inc., and the Arts Council of Cebu Foundation, the concerts will be the classical guitar events of the year in the country.
Ms. Rojas, described by the Washington Post as “Guitarist extraordinaire,” will play a mainly classical repertoire with a taste of jazz and salsa.
Also performing are Monching Carpio and Triple Fret. Monching is a former college mate and one of the young and bemedalled guitarists of today. Triple Fret is the first all girl guitar band in the country. Three lovely girls who can rock a riff.
Berta Rojas will also give a masterclass to selected guitarists who have qualified in a screening process on May 14 at Richmonde Hotel, her official Manila residence during her tour. For those who are wondering what a master class is, it’s much like an actual lesson, only there will be an audience. The master teacher (Ms. rojas) coaches the guitarist participant for 30 minutes and will do some critiquing on the piece he played. Guitarists and enthusiasts will surely learn a lot even by just observing.
As a soprano, I was fortunate to have sung for master classes of internationally known opera stars–Filipino tenor Arthur Espiritu and Australian soprano Claire Primrose.
For ticket purchases, call Ticketworld at 891-9999 or Ticketworld.com.ph. For further inquiries, please write Monch Carpio at monchingcarpio@gmail.com or ipavinc@gmail.com.
I do hope to see you there, and please, support at least one art activity per month. It will nourish your cultural soul and develop good taste.

They dance, and dance really well! Johnny Rockets servers in action.
One warm afternoon last week, I took my daughter to a far away land called Eastwood Mall. We were invited to join the Bloggers Day of Johnny Rockets, an international restaurant chain which gives you that feel and groove of the good ol’ American atmosphere.
Think 50s and 60s Americana and you will think of burgers, shakes, and fries. Johnny Rockets has all these and more. This summer, they introduced their Summer Shakes which blends the best of both worlds: Filipino favorite Halo-Halo, Guyabano, and Hawaiian Breeze!
Cool down with these yummy and refreshing shakes. Before the event started, we got to take a sip of their shakes outside the warm sun of Eastwood.
Halo-halo got the landslide win for me and my daughter, and for most of the guests there as well. Pure halo-halo goodness without mixing the ice and the toppings.
Halo-Halo get the moustache of approval from Aria.
The servers dance throughout the program, as well as our children.
Here’s Touringkitty’s heiress, Aria, with Glaiza of Moomy Musing’s (www.moomymusings.com) little Noa. That lady dancing server did a great job making the kids dance.
They had us taste their original burger, fries, and shake. I am not so much a burger person, but very much a fries and shake person. So I was delighted know they will give a whole serving of shake!
More dancing happened, as you can see in the next photos:
Johnny Rockets Dancing Servers are the restaurant’s pride.Kids join in the fun. My Aria would not miss the dancing, and eventually joined in again after eating.
Do you want to have your kids a rockin’ and groovin’ summer? They can still participate in the Johnny Rockets Summer Camp!
From the Johnny Rockets Facebook page. Click the photo go to their FB page.
Learn to create their burgers and make that smiling ketchup-in-a-serving plate. Dance to the cool tunes of the era. Enjoy four days of meeting new friends. Slots for May still available. You may visit their branches to inquire.

Do you love watching movies? Concerts? Shows? Musicals? Look no further, because you can get almost all of it in one sitting–while dining!
Movie Stars Cafe welcomes you with this door.
We first learned about it through my sister, who had been here a couple of times last year. Then, for her holiday treat to us, she brought us here before Christmas. We had a great time, and I knew we will go back here again.
Luckily, I got an invitation to visit again this month, so we visited on Easter Sunday, after we were done with church engagements from morning to afternoon.
Lots of posters and memorabilia around. Better check them out in between shows, which are 30 minutes apart.TVs everywhere! While waiting for the on-stage shows, movies are shown……and characters like him appear from nowhere! He recalled us, from our previous visit. And this! Acting silly with my hubby.
Before I show you what’s on stage, let me show what’s on our plate:
Popcorn shrimp and rice. It was cheat day for my husband, so he got some beer.We had a humongous serving of what they call “The Notebook.” I had banana milkshake, on the other hand.
I was not able to take a photo of what my mom and sister ordered, it’s called Star Wars, another humongous serving of stir-fried veggies and chicken, over a big serving of rice. Their meals can be shared, so better plan your order well. They also have a buffet, if you’re up for more eating.
So, on with the shows:
Nah, not this! My daughter was too comfortable on stage. This was just about when the restaurant opened, where there were just a handful of diners inside. The shows began with this cosplayers. Good thing they added more staff, or else there would be no one serving the food!Barbie Girl. Be-wigged ladies with preppy clothes. The much-awaited main show, Beauty and the Beast! The singers did great.
During our first visit, this was the main show:
Lion King. The female who sang Mufasa was good.
I think I liked Beauty and the Beast more than their Lion King Presentation. I caught bored dancers during the Lion King, teehee!
Before we ended our night, we caught this!
A foreigner re-proposing to her wife. They have been together for three years and have a child already, but this guy proposed his love and marriage to her. *insert cheesy music here*They also had an Easter egg hunt. Lucky my daughter was, she missed that morning’s egg hunt at church. She got two eggs (with our help, of course) in exchange for toys. Here’s Touringkitty’s posse: My husband, daughter, Touringkitty, my mom, and my sister.
We did have a good time. And you can have a good time with them, too!

I have not yet posted our Preschool hunting last March. I have been remiss with homeschooling my daughter this month because of the super busy schedules. Blame the busy work-at-home/performing/teaching/blogging mommy me.
Result is: my daughter has been playing. A whole lot. But my friends say I should not worry. I just have to make her playtime educational and fun!
Anyway, I found out this online reading and math program which is a perfect fit for us. I am excited to try this out. Will update on our progress as we get the ball rolling.
Maybe you want to check it out as well, here’s how:
K5 Learning has an online reading and math program for kindergarten to grade 5 students. I’ve been given a 6 week free trial to test and write a review of their program. If you are a blogger, you may want to check out their open invitation to write an online learning review of their program.
The Madz et al, the first and largest network of Filipino choral groups, celebrated 30 years of singing together through a weeklong festival at the Cultural Center of the Philippines last April 1-6.
Composed of over 50 choirs, the Madz et al network gathers in an annual choral festival which gained a regular following with its varied themes per year. As part of the Philippine Madrigal Singers family, the choirs are also invited to guest in different projects and concerts of their mother choir.
The choirs, by themselves, are equally exceptional. Trained, mentored, and handled by members and alumni of the Madz, the Madz et al choirs have toured and won competitions both here and abroad.
Madz founder, Prof. Andrea O. Veneracion, considers this her “golden harvest.” With her ultimate goal of having a Singing Philippines, the Madz et al is a testimony that our country is indeed blessed with such riches in choral music.
Being a Madz alumna, I am blessed to handle my own choral group, the Shrine of Jesus Children’s Choir. As I trace back my choral conducting journey, I consider myself an accidental conductor.
Almost eight years back, I just want to serve again in the church, after being inactive because of school and Madz duties. Ton (my husband, who was then my boyfriend), had started serving for the church in the Reclamation area, the Archdiocesan Shrine of Jesus. When I found out that there is no children’s choir at the church, I opened up the idea of forming one, so we both set an appointment with the Rector, Monsignor Bobby Canlas, and he welcomed the idea very much.
Mons Bobby assisted us in setting up the group, through announcements during the Mass, and he even assigned one of his staff to assist us during auditions. After which, we had literally a handful of members–ten of them, whom we started training to serve for the monthly children’s mass every Third Sunday of the month. Unfortunately, I was about to leave for the Madz tour then, so Ton took over the kids. And on June 2006, during Father’s Day, those ten kids had sung their first mass as a group.
Since then, the kids grew in numbers, and literally grew bigger than us! Currently, we maintain a regular membership of 30, composed of students aged 10-18, from nearby cities and municipalities. The members are still singing treble voices, but we are slowly on the works of transitioning to a youth choir with mixed voices, God-willing.
For this Madz et al performance, we were asked to commission a new piece for our choir. Then we chose two other pieces. Click on the titles for our video links below:
2. Alamat (Augusto Espino). We premiered this commissioned piece with poetry written by Ramon Devora and the magnificent music of Augusto Espino.
3. Ano Kaya ang Kapalaran (Francisco Santiago). With a couple of weeks left before the performance, I hurriedly wrote arrangement and did a little choreography for this Filipino favorite. I had a very willing volunteer who sang the solo.
Here are some snapshots during the concert night:
I have very supportive parents, and this is important to a children’s choir. Thy willingly assist the kids in putting makeup and fixing costumes.Ready for the show!On to their last number, we did it!Certificates were awarded to the conductors, all Madz alumni: Elsie Eranista of Letran Singing Ambassador, Me (with my daughter tagging along!), Robert Delgado of UMAK Chorale and NGCP Chorale, and Mavic Llamas of Coro San Sebastian. Mark Carpio of the Madz who served as the Festival Director also conducted Pansol Choir that night. The kids were so glad we finished another et al season! Here is one of the members, Hans Bariring, proudly showing off the certificate I received for them. One of our staunch supporters, Mons Bobby, who happily posed with us after the concert. Thank you, Mons, for supporting these kids as much as we do!My family, Mons Bobby, and two of our members, siblings Anna and Hans. They are Irish twins, meaning born less than 12 months apart.
We’re glad to be part of the 30th anniversary. We have consistently taken part in the et al festivals and other Madz et al projects since 2008. We are blessed with the many opportunities the Madz et al had brought about to our kids, like performances at the CCP Main Theater, and even TV guestings.
To our dear composers, AJ and Sir Agot, thank you for sharing with us God’s gift of music. To our ever dearest pianist, my good friend, Michelle Nicolasora, thank you for always being humble and available for me and my choir. To Ton, needless to say, thank you for being with me through all of this, and for assisting again in guitar.
I’d like to thank the Madz for this opportunity. Indeed the mission of Ma’am OA, through the Madz et al, is alive through all the choirs and future choirs that will be born out of love for singing.
I thank likewise Mons Bobby, for training me to be a leader, especially in the church ministry. Thank you for the constant guidance, support, and inspiration, especially when challenges arise.
To the parents of our members, a million thanks once again. We are happy that you have chosen the Shrine for your children’s church service. Thank you for believing and supporting our endeavors.
The SOJCC is rooted in church service, but as artists, we have the responsibility to also teach them to sing well so they could serve better. I am glad to be doing both things that I truly enjoy–serving the church through music making.
To the Madz et al choirs and conductors, congratulations! Here’s to 30 more years and maybe twice more the number of choirs that will be born and be minstrels of music around the world. Until the next performance.
Congratulations as well to the organizers, the Madz members themselves, for being at the forefront of this project. To Ate Pearl Reyes, coordinating all those choirs and conductors is one tough job, and you have done it well every year! To the members who served as stage managers, backstage persons, reception persons, and whathaveyou, kudos to all! To Sir Mark, for giving us challenging themes every year. This year, we really were made to THINK!
To my husband and daughter, for funding my blog (teehee) and for loving it as much as you love me. I love you both, too.
To the many groups I belong to–the performing world, choral world, teaching world, mommy world, breastfeeding world, homeschooling world, church world, WAHMing world, mommy blogging world, for being sources of my blog stories.
And to my ultimate source of all this, Touringkitty, my beloved magic wand, for being the beginning of my journey. If not for our travels in the past I would not have had a Touringkitty.
So, enjoy reading! Like my Facebook Page to be updated with more things happy!
