Date Night: Cantus Puero and Ginza Bairin

My husband and I enjoy watching concerts. In the past months, we’d rather spend date nights watching concerts than hitting the movie house. We often get to watch classical concerts, especially those featuring our friends.

So when I found out about a concert featuring Madz Choirmaster and our ninong Mark Carpio singing as countertenor, I knew we had to watch. It is very rare for him to be performing as singer of late, that’s why never miss opportunities like this!

The concert, entitled Cantus Puero or Song for the Child, is part of the UP College of Music’s Faculty Concert Series which features the college’s faculty teaching by performing. It was held at the Abelardo Hall Auditorium last January 16. This concert was their post-Christmas offering, thus the theme was about the Christ-Child.

Performers include sopranos Sherla Najera (a music education faculty), Stef Quintin (a senior voice student), countertenor Mark Carpio (Madz Choirmaster, faculty of conducting, and a dear ninong and friend), tenor Ervin Lumauag (a voice graduate; also a Madz alumnus and a good friend), accompanist Augusto “Agot” Espino (another ninong and my former piano teacher), and oboist Franz Ramirez (a young oboe player and principal oboist of the ABSCBN Philharmonic Orchestra. Crystal Rodis on flute supported the cast for one Bach piece, which she performed competently.

The concert started with a new composition by Alejandro Consolacion, a good friend and former schoolmate, who is now studying in the US. Mary’s Lullaby is a work for oboe and piano, which was played with much passion by Franz and the able accompaniment of Sir Agot.

Solos, duets, trios, quartets were then performed one after the other. There were some songs that I really stood out for me–Ervin’s wonderful interpretation of the Bach piece–Frohe Hirten, Ervin and Mark’s lovely duet– Sound the Trumpet by Purcell, and Stef and Mark’s simple duet–Maria Wiegenlied by Reger.

During the second part, Mark asked the audience to sing along two Christmas Carols with them. What’s funny is that the audience went tacet or silent after the first verses–not knowing what the second verses of both songs were!

image

Among the audience were Madz members and Kilyawan Boys Choir members and their parents, a good concert to watch to discover and learn about their voices more. If this were not a weeknight and near Pasay, I’d encourage my own kids to watch.

Congratulations to all who are involved in this concert, especially the performers!

Dinner time next! I wanted to check out UP Town Center, the newly developed Ayala Mall establishment along Katipunan.

As I recently watched on Kris TV (yeah, favorite show of moms like me, don’t judge!), I knew there was an iHop among other restos. After taking one round to check out what’s in store for us, we settled at Ginza Bairin, a Katsu house.

This is what I got: Mixed Set A of Rosu katsu, white fish, and tempura:

image

Hubby is transitioning to vegan, but here he has a salmon dish to feast on:

image

I had a strong bias for Yabu since the first and only time I tried it. I knew nothing would top their katsu. And I was right. The prawn  I had at Ginza Bairin was yummier!

Then it’s time to pick pasalubongs for my daughter and her caregivers for the night–my mom and sister–as thank you to them. We asked them to choose between Vanilla Cupcake Bakery and J.Co, but they chose the earlier.

image

My daughter liked cream cheese so much that it was the first thing she ate during the morning snack the day after. I got a Red Velvet Cupcake for my mom and Banana Nutella Cupcake for my sister. They preferred the Banana Nutella more.

UP is proving to be quite far from Pasay lately. This being said by Pasay residents who used to study in UP/Ateneo and commuting everyday. Nevertheless, it was a fun date night after all!

Breastfeeding: A Journey Worth Taking (Book Launch)

If there is one thing motherhood did to me, it’s realizing the impact of breastfeeding.

More than anything, I was more concerned on what to feed the newborn. I actually prepared for formula feeding, and planned on what the doctor would recommend. But luckily, my OB-GYN was strongly urging me to TRY breastfeeding.

So we did. And we fell in love with it that my husband and I made it our advocacy. We both realize the many wonderful things breastfeeding did for our family. You can read a compilation of my own stories here. We still breastfeed our almost three and a half year old little girl when she wants. Upon waking up, before sleeping, and just whenever she’d feel like it. It was really a journey worth taking.

I am just so happy to find out that a new book all about breastfeeding is coming out. And it’s authored by a Filipino mom and published locally!

Image

The book, “Breastfeeding: A Journey Worth Taking” will be launched next Saturday, January 25, 3:00 PM-5:00 PM at Mothercare, Active Fun Building, 9th Avenue, Bonifacio Global City. The book launch will also feature talks that will surely inform and inspire moms about breastfeeding.

 Image

It is free, but you need to give a heads up if you’re attending. You may do so here.

Congratulations to Teresa Gumap-as Dumadag, a work-at-home/homeschooling mom, for this  book! May this book be an instrument to reach out to more families the many wonderful benefits of breastfeeding.

Lea Salonga says, “Magandang Araw!”

We kept on guessing who the new brand ambassador for Insular Life is, until the phrase “world-class Filipina” was mentioned. Only one name comes to mind — Lea Salonga. I kinda had a hint as I saw vans of a television network parked outside of the quaint Seda Hotel at Bonifacio Global City, where the press launch for this Filipino life insurance company was held.

As you may have seen in Insular Life’s TV commercials nowadays, Lea Salonga is the company’s first ever celebrity endorser.

Ginger of Manila Workshops and Mommy Ginger invited some mommy bloggers to this press launch last Friday. There, I was able to meet Mommy Glaiza of Moomy Musings and Mommy Milette of http://luckyfinds-shareapic.blogspot.com. I wanted to find out what this life insurance company has in store for its clients and prospective clients this year. As a mom myself, I am looking for the best options where to invest financially.

Lunch was served as the guests trickled in. While waiting for the start of the program, we were directed to two booths behind us: a coffee station and a laptop showing an AVP about their upcoming campaign website.

What better way to have a good day than to drink a steaming hot cup!

Two of Insular Life executives then spoke about their 2014 communications campaign and its components.

A website called MagandangAraw.com.ph which will be formally launched on January 20, will encourage people to do good deeds that exhibit positivism, write about them or upload photos of it in the website, and share their experiences through social media networks with the hashtags #InsularMovement and #MagandangAraw. Raffle prizes await the lucky positive movers.

An invitation for coffee and a live encounter with possible clients shall also take place. Here is where the Insular Life’s Magandang Araw Brew by Roaster Juan’s come in. This artisan coffee shall be served to possible clients or life insurance sellers.

Aside from spreading positivism, Lea stressed the importance of having a secure financial future for the family. Getting life insurance does not only mean securing yourself. It also means peace of mind for the people you love.

And this year, our family is set to do both — do more good deeds (specifically giving to charity more) and strengthen our family’s financial investments while our daughter is not yet in school.

Another photo with Lea, this time, I am not performing alongside her, but writing about her

I leave you with this song commissioned by Insular Life, “Isang Magandang Araw,” with lyrics by Rayna Vihuela Reyes and music composed and arranged by Mike Villegas. I hope it will spark positivism in you, too.

Madz @ 50: ppp: Pagdiriwang, Pagtitipon, Paggunita

Some two weeks ago, Madz singers, past and present, were invited to a very special evening we conspicuously call the “Madrigal Dinner.”

It was indeed a great celebration of food, music, and family, and incidentally, the event was held on the Feast Day of the Holy Family on December 29th. Alumni from all batches came in gowns and some even came in authentic Renaissance costumes!

Madz from across all batches! Happy to see all of them. We missed those who missed this event!
Madz from across all batches! Happy to see all of them. We missed those who missed this event.

So, what happens during a Madrigal Dinner?

I remember during my first year with the Madz, we have done a Madrigal Dinner, which was in reality, a concert-dinner featuring us. It was a paid dinner of course, at a Makati hotel. The previous batches have done it as well. After that event, the Madz have not done a Madrigal Dinner.

What was happening then, as what also happened for this particular dinner, the Madz sings a set of songs in between courses. For this Madrigal Dinner, the fun part is when we got to sing (AND sight-sing!) our favourite Madrigals and a couple of new pieces!

Actual sight-singing happening!
Actual sight-singing happening!

The entire CCP Main Theater Lobby was turned into a dinner hall, a first probably for the venue, and with the backdrop and decor, plus the music that permeated that night, it felt really Renaissance!

Let the photos do the talking now!

First photo when we arrived: the one with Fair Oriana herself, Mavic! She was one of my closest during the tours. Here with Bianca, Sherwin, and Ate Pearl.

Well. Mavic, the character that she is, eventually won Best in Costume!

Along with two other alumni, Tita Bernie (who said her costume was an exact replica of their Madrigal Dinner costumes during their time!), and Tito Leo (who came in as the Sultan of Butuan. He said that so himself. We all just loved the gold in him!

Before I forget, here’s my OOTD:

Black gown and lace bolero: Karimadon. Gold brooch: Karimadon. Headpiece: Carolina's. Black platform shoes: Gibi. Black and gold bag: Jovani.

Check out the chair! The logo of the Madz! They had it made for the Aurum concert two weeks prior to this event:

The Madz had set up photobooths–one for the formal shot, the other, for the wacky ones. Like this:

Photobooth crazy!

We also recorded a video of us singing “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” by Peter Lutkin. You are not a certified Madz if you do not know this song! It was a timely New Year greeting as the text was also the Scripture reading for New Year’s Day.

It was a truly memorable night for everyone, which made us all celebrate, gather, and reminisce the wonderful experience that is the Madz.

Touringkittyps: Five for the Event Planning Newbie

Happy New Year, everyone! Here’s wishing you all a rockin’ 2014!

I am introducing a new category here at the blog and it’s called Touringkittyps. And here is my first serving!

Some five years ago, I was planning our own wedding. I chose to do it ourselves so that everything we wanted will be followed by the detail.

But boy, oh, boy, it was hard. My husband and I both had full-time jobs and were also on top of a big church fund-raising event during that time. After the wedding, we only wished we hired a wedding coordinator to help us out. We even had to scout suppliers on our own, as we only managed to attend one wedding fair due to our very busy schedules.

So, here are five tips for the soon-to-be-weds or even those who have other upcoming events, like debuts and birthdays!

1. Know what you really, really want. It will be hard if you don’t, so, set your mind on an object, or a color, and revolve around it and only it! Pinterest has mood boards or inspiration boards to get you started. You can even work one of your own! I was then just set on two things: Pink and Hello Kitty, so I got all inspiration from there. Don’t worry, I only had a Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel cake topper and that’s the only Sanrio you could see during the wedding!

2. Make a checklist and check it not once, not twice, but everyday. Always set a goal to do one thing a day, like scouting for a supplier, doing an ocular of the venue, or listing possible invitees. Make sure also to tick that checklist so that you are sure you have done the task.

3. KISS: Keep it simple and stunning! Yes, I have a different meaning for KISS. Simple does not always mean less tasteful. Every event can be a happy and successful one if everything on it is just the way you wanted it.

4. Ask for help. You need it. When I was really stressed out as THE day got nearer, I got help from family and friends. They were most welcome to accommodate and so much more.

5. Scout for suppliers. Here comes all those wedding and debut fairs happening all around the metro. There is one happening this weekend!

Image

For those planning their weddings and debuts this early, go and troop SM Megamall for the 15th Ultimate Wedding and Debut Fair and check out the one-stop shop for all your supplier needs. Book your supplier this early to get HUGE discounts!

What you need to do first is register online through this link to avail of free entrance for two plus other promos and freebies during the event. What’s even better is if you are already an Ensogo user, you may register online through their link which entitles you to an exclusive raffle promo for voucher holders!

Enjoy your party planning!

Holiday Pause

Who said fasting and abstinence is only for Lent?

I will attempt to do mine, this Christmas and New Year.

I have finally wrapped up my last project for the year, and will try not to be online for the next week (fingers crossed!).

This year has been incredibly crazy but wonderful for me. Everything came fast, and I am thankful that God has been the most faithful God there is.

So, to all my friends, have a blessed Christmas and New Year ahead! You are all in our prayers.

Don’t forget to click this blogpost for my Christmas gift to you: a $10 credit from design website, Canva!

Jazz up your Christmas Cards with Canva

Who likes to receive Christmas Cards? I know I do, and I like making my own, too.

Unlucky me, I do not have artists’ hands to draw, colour, and paint. And that’s when the computer is put in good use. Especially the good ol’ Microsoft Publisher (ya, call me old fashioned, but I do ALL things in that little program!). Then I can just print the cards and they’re ready to be given away.

But technology has made the work of postmen so yesterday. We all do send emails and e-cards as they call it. I do, too, especially when it’s Christmas.

Luckily, I discovered a design website where you can make your Christmas Cards easy, fun, and free!

You read it right.

FREE!

Design your Christmas Cards at Canva, a new, easy to use, design website which can cater to your specific design needs like blog graphics, Facebook covers, presentations, and others.

And since it is the season of giving, Your Royal Kittyness, Touringkitty, is giving away FREE $10 credit which you can use for upgrading your designs by using more images over at Canva. Isn’t it cool?

Head over to this link to claim your gift. I made my own which I have shared over at the Touringkitty Facebook Page.

Choicest blessings to your family this wonderful season!

Handa ka na ba? (Are you ready?)

It was the fourth day of the anticipated Simbang Gabi. I was hoping the previous attendance of five kids would be more, knowing that some of my members are almost done or maybe done with exams. Unfortunately, I had four.

I don’t mind. I trust my kids too well that I know they could deliver. And deliver they did. We had a good service tonight. We even had to change the line-up to more familiar songs so that the community could better participate. They were prepared for these kinds of “emergencies.”

What was best though was the Homily delivered by Fr. Elis Santos of Don Bosco, Mandaluyong. It was all about what my kids had shown: being ready.

Earlier in the morning, a dear friend posted the following on Facebook, and I quote:

It was a night like any other night but it wasn’t a child like any other child… How can we take such a simple story which can be read in seven verses and come up with a complicated celebration? As the world celebrates the birth of Christ for all the wrong reasons for the expressions of self-indulgence, materialism, partying and social events of any kind, may we find the real significance why Jesus had to be born in human form. Don’t clutter your mind with such Christmas clutters.

So, why are we readying our Christmas presents, then? Why do we rush to that expensive restaurant or hotel to make an early reservation? Why are malls filled to the brim? Why are we readying ourselves for the wrong things?

Fr. Elis gave us three simple things that will help us Be Ever Ready, especially when the -BER months usher in:

Basa ng Bibliya (Read the Bible). One verse a day. Then it will become one passage, one chapter, one book, then the entire thing. One step at a time.

1 Peter 2:2 said it: Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.

Enthusiastic (participation in the) Eucharist. One hour a week. Only one hour. That’s what is requested of us. You need not to be part of the lectors or of the choir to be able to participate. Respond, sing along the songs, focus, pray.

Regular Rosary. Filipinos are known to be Marian devotees. A Rosary a day is like a bunch of flowers offered to the Blessed Mother, and the many intentions you have prayed for each bead. Like an apple a day, a rosary a day keeps you connected with the Blessed Mother, who is praying for all of us to our Lord.

Seems easy, right? But are we really committed to do all of these? Are we really readying ourselves for the main event next week, Jesus’ Birthday?

Toys for Joys

Toys for Joys.

This was Aria’s project for St. Nick’s Day when we sorted her toys to give away. It took me an hour of explaining and crying from her before she finally gave up her old, non-battery operated, and educational toys. She understood that other kids who do not have toys will be happily playing with them, thus she named the project as such.

I actually planned to turn them over to Jollibee, but did not have time to bring them yet. I had two bagfuls, and I might do another round of spring cleaning including books.

We did our weekly grocery this afternoon, and we rode the tricycle. It was not just us and the driver, but three other kids suddenly jumped to sit on the driver’s seat.

The driver, an old fellow who seemed to be working hard to earn them a living, seated the two girls in front of him, the little boy behind him.

I could not offer the seats inside the sidecar, as I had Aria and the groceries. Besides, it seemed as if they are used to sitting on what seemed a hazardous place. No seatbelts, no helmets. Imagine my horror. And there were three kids there!

One kid held a toy boat, an old and dirty one, which Aria took notice of quickly. They passed the toy boat to each other, and then I thought they might be the best beneficiaries to our simple project.

While in transit, I called my aunt who was at our condo to bring down the bag of toys we sorted. Then I decided which ones they can already play with.

They were surprised with the toys I gave! The boy, who was the oldest among them, said Thank You in a soft and shy tone. I reminded them all to share the toys with each other and not fight over them.

Aria was quite happy with what we did. She kept on repeating “Toys for Joys!”

Yes, honey, they thank you for sharing your toys with them.

Madz @ 50: The story behind the music

Image
Photo credit: Alfred John De Veyra (via Facebook)

Want to know the stories behind the music?

We heard their mellifluous music for five decades. Now it’s time to just read, be inspired, and learn through their words.

This is the first book that will be published in the 50 years of the Madz‘ existence. Sometime in 2001, a book called a Life Shaped by Music was written by Marjorie Evasco, but it mainly is a biographical sketch of Prof. Andrea O. Veneracion, who dedicated most of her life to developing  her “other” family, the Madz.

MADZ: Almost everything about the Philippine Madrigal Singers is a collection of firsthand accounts from the singers themselves. It also includes probably the whole anatomy of the group–from its roots to its wings, from the history to the “golden harvest” called the Madz et al. One of the alumnus, Alfred John de Veyra, put our stories together in this milestone book every choir should have.

The book will be launched this weekend during the Madz concert entitled Aurum. December 14 (8:00 PM) and 15 (5:00 PM) at the CCP Main Theater. The current members and alumni, along with the Madz et al choirs plus other guests will be part of it. I will sing there, as well as my Shrine of Jesus Children’s Choir. Hope to see you there!
